Via Maqueda is a long road that cuts across the more ancient “Cassaro”, giving its typical cruciform aspect to the topography of the most ancient part of the city.
Incidentally, the center of the cross, Piazza Vigliena (otherwise known as “I quattro canti di città”) was a privileged place for official communications, popular demonstrations of protest, etc.
